Question: Discuss about the Business Ethics for Ethical Concerns of the Communities? Answer: Introduction This report focuses on the ethical concerns of the communities in which BP (British Petroleum) perates. It operates in Europe, North America, South America, Asia-Pacific and Africa and Middle East. The Corporate Social Responsibility of BP is discussed in this article. Various terminologies like CSR, pressure groups, communities have been explained. Pipeline blowup in Turkey incident is studied and the reaction of the company is noted down. Alternative impact of this company on society has also been pointed out. The effect on environment, tourism, ecology and pollution has been further discussed in the assignment. Moreover the assignment discusses the laws and Regulations governing the company. Company background British Petroleum is a Multinational oil and gas company headquartered in London. This company operates in petrochemicals, refining, power generation, trading and exploration of oil and gas. This company operates in the field of generation of Wind power and Bio fuels. This Company produces 3.2mn barrels per day and has a reserve of 17.9bn barrels. This company has recorded total assets of US $261.8 billion at the end of 2015 (Nwf.org 2016).However in the past the company was involved in various health and safety violations. Key terms Corporate Social Responsibility: This means the responsibility of the company towards community and ecological and social environment in which it operates. Company can express their responsibility through: contributing towards education and social causes, earning decent amount in employed resources and checking the waste and pollution (Pilcher et al. 2014) Figure 1: Diagram showing CSR responsibilities (Source: Allan et al. 2012). Globalization: This is an ongoing process of linking countries, regions, information cities and neighborhoods. The lives of the people are intertwined by the foods they eat, the music they listen to and the clothes they wear. This process has lead to the word Global Village and made the world a smaller place. Barriers of national and international boundaries are slowly diminishing. This has increased international flow of goods and services, information through internet services and free exchange of cultures and music (Cleveland and Saundry 2016). Communities: This means a social unit of any size sharing common values, ethics or a staying at a particular geographical area. Normally communities refer to national, international or virtual communities. Communities can be of various size and types ranging from art, housing, place, purpose to rural communities. This helps to share ideas of common interest, pleasure, task or sheer entertainment. Bonding happens very well within a community because of same type of ideologies and thinking (Schwacke et al. 2013). Pressure groups: Group which does not stand in an election but influences government policy or legislations are called pressure groups. They are also known as lobby groups or interest groups. This group is active in many fields Corporate, media, entertainment and many others. Lobby group in corporate sector is quite common. Many hedge fund managers like Carl Icahn, Bill Auckman are known to be corporate lobbyists (Pilcher et al. 2014). They persuade the government to change their course of actions as per their will. Deep Water Disaster Deep water disaster or Gulf of Mexico started on 20/04/2010 in the Gulf of Mexico (Dosomething.org 2016). After the explosion and sinking of Deep Water Horizon oil rig, a sea bed oil gusher floated for 87 days and eventually it was capped on 15/07/2010. Eleven people died and this is considered to be the largest oil spill of human history. The well was eventually sealed on 19/08/2010. Investigation revealed that oil was still leaking from the well several years after also. This event massively affected marine life and fishing. This event affected dolphins very much. They died at record numbers and the infant dolphins died six times the normal rate. Investigations revealed that cementing on the oil well was faulty and there was also the fault of rig operator According to Allan et al. 2012, various methods were used to address spilled oil problems. Leaked oil was of a heavier blend containing Asphalt like substances. This type of oil does not evaporate well and cannot be rinsed off. Microbes cannot eat out those particles also. Louisiana island barrier plan was constructed to keep off the oil particles from the island. $220 mn was spent on this project. It was termed more of a political move than a scientific move. A big volume of oil dispersant was used. This method provided short term benefits. Although the use of was highly controversial. Military aircrafts were used to spray 1.1 million gallons of dispersant. Previously unknown species of bacteria was released into the ocean. Later on, it was found that the microbes mainly digested the natural gas spewing out of the oil rather than the oil itself. So, it was found to be ineffective. This company acted under the guidance of the federal government. People affected by the oil disaster were compensated. Health, safety and the welfare of the large number of residents affected by the oil spill were taken care of. This company supported the economic recovery of the seafood and Tourism industry of the Gulf Coast area. Pipeline Blowup in Turkey This incident happened over the town of Refahiye. Cameras and Sensors were fitted on the pipeline to monitor every step of 1099 miles of journey. When the explosion happened, none of the sensors send distress signal and the camera recorded nothing unusual. This event is suspected to be the work of computer hackers and the government blamed a malfunction while BP started running the pipeline within 3 weeks. Reaction to this incidence was mixed. Turkish Media blamed one extremist group called Kurdistan Worker Party. Government blamed a malfunction while BP started operations after 3weeks. One section of media blamed the computer hackers for hacking software. This event closed down fuel exports thus stopping fuel supply to Turkey. Reaction of BP- BP evacuated 212 workers from the site. They shutdown 2 oil fields and output was cut down by 500000 barrels a day. BP was not able to normalize production for months. Initially, the partners of BP were not informed about this incidence. But they came to know about it later on. Former CEO Tony Hayward blamed a bad cementing job by the contractors (Dosomething.org 2016). Alternative Impact on Community. Oil spilling is a major pollution creating process. In case of oil split this company, must ensure that oil particles must not reach shore and massively affect the marine life. Booms, which are an effective tool to contain or divert oil spills, can be effectively used to check oil spill. This can be recovered using skimmers or burned off later. Dispersants are an effective tool to break up an oil slick into small particles which then gets mixed with the water. Smaller oil particles are bio degradable and helps reduce the massive loss of sensitive marine life. Most importantly the tools and techniques that are used should be maintained at a regular interval .BP must have an emergency department having well stocked dispersants and boom. Implications and Ethical Concerns of Community In case of Deep Water Disaster, not only the local community was affected but also this effected nearby communities also. Community was worried because the quantity of oil spill was huge. Residents were evacuated from the locality, as this event created health dangers to the residents. People, whose life depended on fishing, were badly affected. Tonnes of marine animals were found floating. Tourism industry was also badly affected. No tourists would like to visit an affected area. The livelihood of the community was at danger. Oil slick flowed across borders and affected other countries also. Oil spills entered the bodies of marine animals which in turn affected human health. Affecting Currently. People suffered toxic effects like, respiratory, neurological and ocular. People are still suffering from headache, nausea, nose, and eye and ear irritation. Local area and other affected areas still do not get enough tourist visits. Affecting in future. Health will remain a issue in the future also. Marine life will take more than a decade to recover. Bad ecological impact will continue to exist in the future also. Tourism industry may recover in the near future but government has to take initiatives to promote this industry. Involvement, Support and Reaction. Disasters like Deepwater crisis, Turkey blow up are of huge level. One organization cannot be blamed for this disaster. In the case of Deepwater crisis, Company was obviously at fault, but government lacked proper regulatory measures. BP has a good connection with the Federal Government and they lobbied government as per their own will to increase profitability. Other agencies like UN, UNESCO and WTO have a role to play in this kind of crisis. Mere protest from one agency is not enough to stop a giant corporation like BP. Various Laws, Policies and Agreements are in place to prevent such kind of manmade disasters. Agencies like Disaster Risk Reduction, National Department of Civil Protection, and United Nations commission for Refugees. Summarization Deep water disaster and Turkey blowup incidence was a major event. It impacted local and global communities. Marine life, tourism were badly affected. The CSR of this company ranges across Safety, Environment and Society. Safety of employees, local communities and taking care of the environment and Society are the main priorities of BP. After the disasters, BP became more sensitive towards society and environment. Recap of Company reaction. According to Allan et al. (2012), BP took urgent measures to control disaster. 212 employees were evacuated, affected people were compensated and health benefit facilities were provided to affected people. BP was ethical in what they did. But BP should have extra cautious on their act. Instead of being profit making institute, they could have been more sensitive. Impact Overall impact could have been huge if BP was more sensitive towards its approach. Even if a disaster happened, the impact of disaster would have been lessened. Anne Hutchinson Anne Hutchinson She was born as Anne Marbury in 1591 in Alford, England. Her father, Francis Marbury, was an official in a church in Cambridge. He was not content with the Church. He declared publicly that many of the church ministers were not fit to guide people's souls, and for that he was jailed for a year. Even so, he continued verbally attacking the Church, claiming that high church officials freely appointed whoever they wanted, and those people were not usually qualified for their positions. Tired of constant arrests and inquisitions, he finally chose conformity and calmed down. Anne spent a lot of time reading her father's books on theology and religion. She admired his defiance of traditional church principles. She was also fascinated with theological questions like those about the fate of the Native Americans, who did not know about salvation. When she was twenty-one, she married a man named Will Hutchinson and became known as Anne Hutchinson. She also became a mother to fi fteen children. There was a minister, John Cotton, who she always admired. He was originally a Protestant, but as time passed he leaned more and more towards Puritan beliefs. Like her father, he spoke about the corruption in the clergy and called for purification of the Church. He recognized the destructive influence of the Catholic Church on the Church of England, and talked about opportunities for religious freedom in America. Anne Hutchinson's family went to Reverend Cotton's church every Sunday to hear his preachings. Eventually, John Cotton's dream came true, and he was able to cross the Atlantic Ocean and come to New England. In 1634, Anne Hutchinson took her family and followed him to Massachusetts. She wanted to express her increasingly Puritanic views, and she wished to be once again part of John Cotton's congregation. During her voyage to America, she assembled groups of women to discuss religion. She spoke of her views, and became known as a radical. She even claimed that God had revealed to her knowledge of the day of their arrival. Out of sheer coincidence, or for some other unknown reason, she guessed it correctly as September 18, 1634. To her great surprise, New England turned out to be more religiously constrictive than England ever was for her. She was not welcomed warmly by John Cotton because of her unorthodox views. He told her that it would be best for her if she would withhold from speaking about her views. As a prerequisite for her acceptance into the Puritan Church, she had to accept that she was guilty of wrong thinking on the ship and God had not really revealed to her the day of their arrival and that it was a mere guess. She compromised, but in her mind she still held on to her views. She believed that faith alone could bring salvation. She also believed that all people could talk to and receive an answer from God if they would listen. She once said that she felt that nothing important could happen if it was not revealed to her by G od beforehand. Seeing the apprehension of the Church and the community at her views, she only expressed them in the privacy of her own home where she sometimes assembled women to share her ideas with. She was never in open defiance of the Church. Although she disagreed with some of its principles, she was still its devoted member. John Cotton also understood the harsh regime of the Puritan Church and its intoleration of nonconformity. He once said that in New England, members of the Church suffered for having a mind of their own. There was another prominent religious figure in New England. His name was John Winthrop, Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. His dream was to found a city where the Puritan religion would be followed with utmost devotion. He sincerely believed in the inferiority of women to men. He also believed that a woman who devoted herself to reading and writing had lost her understanding and reason. Biography of Artist Romare Bearden à Overview Visual artists Romare Bearden portrayed African-American life and culture in various artistic mediums. Beardenââ¬â¢s work as a cartoonist, painter, and collage artist spanned the Great Depression and post-Civil Rights Movement. Following his death in 1988, The New York Times wrote in its obituary of Bearden that he was ââ¬Å"one of Americaââ¬â¢s most pre-eminent artistsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"the nationââ¬â¢s foremost collagist.â⬠Achievements Established the 306 Group, an organization for African-American artists in Harlem.Co-wrote the jazz classic, ââ¬Å"Sea Breeze,â⬠which was later recorded by Billy Eckstine and Dizzy Gillespie.Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1966.Elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1972.Elected to the National Academy of Design as an associate member in 1978.Awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1987.Established the Bearden Foundation to provide support to young visual artists.Listed as one of Molefi Kete Asanteââ¬â¢s 100 Greatest African Americans. Early Life and Education Romare Bearden was born on September 9, 1912 in Charlotte, N.C.à At an early age, Beardenââ¬â¢s family moved to Harlem. His mother, Bessye Bearden was the New York editor for the Chicago Defender. Her work as a social activist allowed Bearden to be exposed to artists of the Harlem Renaissance at an early age. Bearden studied art at New York University and as a student, he drew cartoons for the humor magazine, Medley. During this time, Bearden also freelanced with newspapers such as Baltimore Afro-American, Collierââ¬â¢s, and the Saturday Evening Post, publishing political cartoons and drawings. Bearden graduated from New York University in 1935. Life as an Artist Throuhgout Beardenââ¬â¢s career as an artist, he was heavily influenced by African-American life and culture as well as jazz music. Following his graduation from New York University, Bearden was attending the Art Students League and working with expressionist George Grosz. It was during this time that Bearden became an abstract collage artist and painter. Beardenââ¬â¢s early paintings often depicted African-American life in the South. His artistic style was influenced heavily by muralists such as Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco. By the 1960s, Bearden was innovative art works that incorporated acrylics, oils, tiles, and photographs. Bearden was heavily influenced by 20th century artistic movements such as cubism, social realism and abstraction. By the 1970s, Bearden continued to depict African-American life through the use of ceramic tilings, paintings and collage. For instance, in 1988, Beardenââ¬â¢s collage ââ¬Å"Family,â⬠inspired a larger artwork that was installed at the Joseph P. Addabbo Federal Building in New York City. Bearden was also heavily influenced by the Caribbean in his work. The lithograph ââ¬Å"Pepper Jelly Lady,â⬠portrays a woman selling pepper jelly in front of a wealthy estate. Documenting African-American Artistry In addition to his work as an artist, Bearden wrote several books on African-American visual artists. In 1972, Bearden coauthored ââ¬Å"Six Black Masters of American Artâ⬠and ââ¬Å"A History of African-American Artists: From 1792 to Presentâ⬠with Harry Henderson. In 1981, he wrote ââ¬Å"The Painterââ¬â¢s Mindâ⬠with Carl Holty. Personal Life and Death Bearden died on March 12, 1988 from complications from bone marrow. He was survived by his wife, Nanete Rohan. Legacy In 1990, Beardenââ¬â¢s widow established The Romare Bearden Foundation. The purpose was to preserve and perpetuate the legacy of this preeminent American artist.à In Beardenââ¬â¢s hometown, Charlotte, there is a street named in his honor along with a collage of glass tiles called ââ¬Å"Before Dawnâ⬠at the local library and the Romare Bearden Park.

But toxic drugs diffuse in to the cell from the bloodstream causing other cells to be toxic. So to minimize diseases/toxicity to other cell or cell membrane nanoparticles should be introduce. Nanoparticles attack on specific cells that causes cancer. Nanoparticles are used to reduce risk of toxicity and side effects of the drug. Doxorubicin nanoparticles binds to specific site of cancer cell and initiate/penetrates inside the cancer cell and breaks open to kill the cancerous cell. Nanoparticles have a relatively large surface which is able to bind, adsorb and carry other compounds such as drugs, probes and proteins (Wim H De Jong, 2008). Cancer is demonstrated as uncontrollable cell growth. Cancer starts when damaged or unused cells start too dived uncontrollably it grows in numbers or doubles so itââ¬â¢s impossible to stop when it spreads around t he body. To stop uncontrollable division of cancerous cell we should react faster. Administering using injection or orally the time taken to react to this cancerous cells is too late so, using nanoparticles its time efficient and its reacts directly with the cancerous cell. A drug is transported to the place of action, hence, its influence on vital tissues and undesirable side effects can be minimized (Wilczewska AZ, 2012). Nanoparticles are used for drug targeting. So, when reaching to the intended diseased/cancerous site in the body the drug carried in the nanoparticle needs to be released. So for drug delivery biodegradable nanoparticle formulations is needed as its intention is to release the drug and react to the cancerous cell. Nanoparticles and their payloads have also been favourably delivered into tumors by taking advantage of the pathophysiological conditions, such as the enhanced permeability and retention effect and the spatial variations in the pHà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬ ¦value (Dr. Tianmeng Sun, 2014). Various nanostructures like polymers, silicon and magnetic nanoparticles have been tested as carriers in drug delivery systems. Like polymers it uses this system where drug is coated on to the polymer and is administered form the mouth to react to the tumor cell. Polymer is a biodegradable substance. So it biodegrades as time goes on. It doesnââ¬â¢t stay in the body so it causes less damage to the cell cause cell toxicity is reduces. It is the same for nanoparticles it provides its function and then degrades causing no further toxicity to the cells. NPs can be used to safely and reliably deliver hydrophilic drugs, hydrophobic drugs, proteins, vaccines, and other biological macromolecules in the body. They can be specifically designed for targeted drug delivery to the brain, lungs, tumor cells and spleen (Singh, 2011). Methodology ââ¬â Ten experimental rats containing cancerous cells kept under controlled condition Experimented on different rats with different stages of cancer The experiment was led under cleanroom because no contaminants enter and contradict the results. Nanoparticle (DOX) containing drug is placed on five rats Other five rats is undergone chemotherapy and its administered by injecting Every 24hrs results were recorded for 3 months Cell toxicity will be recorded by taking sample of blood from the rat every 48hrs The test subjects will be monitored for unusual behaviour for any side effects suffering from the nanoparticle injected in to the body or from the chemotherapy 4 hrs per chemotherapy was led. The treatment was led every three weeks for 3 months on rats. The lab and the result is checked by three competent authority After three months the rats under controlled environment will be checked for possibility of cancerous cell. A tumor marker is substance found in the body tissues that can be elevated only in cancer cells. Oncomarkers is the signature of a cancer cell and modern nanoparticles developed to conjugate to various molecular markers. Doxorubicin (DOX) is the most efficient anti-cancer drug. Thatââ¬â¢s why nanoscale capsule can deliver DOX only inside cancer cells using oncomarker signatures. It consists of a DNA-or origami shell covered by immune factors with molecular binding sites on its surface (Franà §ois Perreault, 2015). Nanoparticle delivery starts form bloodstream. DOX nanoparticles penetrate inside the cancer cell due to cancer markers on its surface. When nanocapsule conjugated with several markers its DNA-origami shell opens releasing DOX inside the cell. DOX successfully delivered. The cancer cell dies due to DOX direct delivery. So itââ¬â¢s expected using DOX direct delivery cancerous cell from the rats is eliminates/ter minated. DOX delivery will be expected to be faster and time efficient whereas chemotherapy will be slower. Shigella flexneri :: Medical Health Biology Essays
Shigella flexneri Shigella flexneri, a facultative anaerobe belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae, is a Gram-negative rod that is the causative agent of diarrhea and dysentery in humans. Potentially life-threatening, S. flexneri's effects include bacteremia, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and toxic megacolon (4). The principle disease of diarrhea and dysentery caused by this pathogen is known as shigellosis. 10-100 organisms are sufficient to cause disease, and transmission is generally from person-to-person by way of fecal-oral (2). Shigellosis can be characterized as a disease with over 60% incidence in children ages 1-5 (6). Life cycle: S. flexneri causes infection via bacterial penetration of the mucous membrane in the human colon. Humans are the only known reservoir to this pathogen (7). Following invasion of M cells and upon contact with the epithelial cells of the colon, S. flexneri releases Ipa proteins through a type three secretion system. Once inside the host cell, Ipa proteins activate small GTPases in the Rho family as well as c-src, a protooncogene, leading to cytoskeletal rearrangements. This alteration to the cytoskeleton allows the bacteria to be macropinocytosed by the host cell. Once inside the host, the pathogen colonizes the cytoplasm. IcsA, a bacterial surface protein, activates the host protein N-WASP and, in turn, stimulates actin assembly by host Arp 2/3. Thus, S. flexneri develops actin-based motility enabling the pathogen to become efficient at cell-to-cell spread and host cell cytoplasmic colonization. Infected cells become highly proinflammatory and secrete IL-8. IL-8 attracts n eutrophils to the site of infection. The influx of neutrophils, chemokines and cytokines to the area damages the epithelial layer permeability and, in turn, advocates further S. flexneri invasion (6). Once initial invasion of S. flexneri occurs, the targeted epithelial cells require 45 minutes to 4 hours to mount an inflammatory response (8). Once in contact with the target cell, Ipa proteins (IpaB, IpaC and Ipa D) encode for a specific type III secretion system, thus, enabling entry of the pathogen into the target cell and characterizing S. flexneri with an invasive phenotype (1). One 30-kb block of the plasmid contains genes at the ipa/mxi-spa locus.
